Data Communication

⭐1. What is Data Communication?

Data communication means exchange of data between two devices through a medium.

Example:

  • Sending messages from one computer to another
  • Dwonloading a file
  • WhatsApp message
  • Email transfer

For communication to happen, devices must be connected and use rules (protocols).

⭐2. Elements of Data Communication (MOST IMPORTANT)

Elements of data communication.png

There are five main elements:

✓1. Message

The actual data (text, image, audio, video).

✓2. Sender

Device which sends data.
Examples: Computer, Phone.

✓3. Receiver

Device which recieves data.
Examples: Printer, Phone.

✓4. Medium (Transmission Channel)

Path where data travels.
Examples: Cable, WiFi, Fiber Optic.

✓5. Protocol

Rules that govern communication.
Example: TCP/IP,HTTP.

⭐3. Characterstics of Good Data Communication

  1. Delivery
  2. The data must reach the correct destination. It should be delivered to the right device or user.

  3. Accuracy
  4. The data must be received without any errors. No changes or corruption should occur during transfer.

  5. Timeliness
  6. The data must be delivered on time. Especially important for real-time communication like video calls or online gaming.

  7. Jitter
  8. Jitter means the variation in delay during data transfer.
    Low jitter = smooth audio/video.
    High jitter = lag, disturbances.

⭐4. Types of Data Flow
or Modes of Transmission (Direction of Data)

✓1. Simplex

One-way communication
Example: TV → User

✓2. Half-Duplex

Two-way, but one at a time
Example: Walkie-Talkie

✓3. Full Duplex

Two-way at same time
Example: Mobile Phone Call

⭐5. Transmission Media (Wired + Wireless)

🟦 A. Guided/Wired Media

✓1. Twisted Pair Cable

Cheap, used in LAN.

✓2. Coaxial Cable

Used in TV cables.

✓.3. Optical Fiber Cable

Fastest, uses light, no interference.

🟩 B. Unguided/Wireless Media

  • Radio Waves
  • Microwaves
  • Infrared
  • Satellite

⭐6. Data Communication Protocols

Protocols are rules that control data transfer.

✓TCP/IP - Main internet protocol ✓HTTP/HTTPS - Web browsing ✓FTP - File transfer ✓SMTP - Sending emails ✓POP/IMAP - Receiving emails ✓VoIP - Voice over IP (Whatsapp call)

⭐7. Advantages of Data Communication

  • Online meetings
  • E-commerce
  • Social media

⭐9. Important Exam Questions

✓Data communication = exchange of data between devices ✓Optical fiber = fastest medium ✓Sender-Receiver-Message-Medium-Protocol = 5 elements ✓Simplex = one direction ✓Full duplex = two-way same time ✓HTTP protocol used for → Web browsing ✓FTTP = File transfer ✓SMTP = Sending email ✓POP/IMAP = Receiving email
